The number of people killed or missing in the flood that struck Uttargaya Rural Municipality in Rasuwa on August 26 has been established. Of those reported missing across the rural municipality, only 11 have been identified, while death registration proceedings are underway for 655 people.
Uttargaya Rural Municipality Chairperson Madhav Aryal said the local government had collected data from across the municipality and initiated the death registration process. Ward 1 of Uttargaya suffered the highest human casualties. According to Aryal, death registration proceedings are underway for 386 people from the ward.
The ward offices and the rural municipality had issued notices requesting information about missing people. Family members of those who had gone missing came to the ward offices and reported that their relatives had been caught in the flood. Based on the information provided by the families, the rural municipality established the number of casualties.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority will verify the figures submitted by the rural municipality. Based on the authority’s verified data, the Cabinet will declare the missing individuals equivalent to deceased persons.
Aryal said that once the Cabinet makes such a declaration, the government relief amount provided to families of deceased persons will be deposited into the respective family members’ bank accounts.
