As of April 12, 2020, a Nepali citizen has to carry a public debt burden of nearly Rs 40,000, according to a recent report of the government.

The Financial Comptroller General Office says the country’s public debt amount stands at Rs 1 trillion 195 billion and 600 million. If this amount is to be divided by the country’s population (29.9 million), a Nepali owes Rs 39,915.

In the past three months before mid-April, the government borrowed Rs 90.461 billion debt, according to the office. The country added 8.18 per cent debt in that period.

Meanwhile, in the first nine months of this fiscal year (mid-July 2019 to mid-April 2020), the debt amount increased by Rs 120 billion.

As of the latest data, the public debt is around 32 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product. More than half of the debt is sourced internationally.
