Nepal Police DIG Ramesh Kharel on Sunday announced that he decided to quit the United Nations peacekeeping responsibility in Darfur of Sudan and come back to Nepal.

Kharel’s decision has been interpreted as as effort to ensure that he will be appointed the chief of Nepal Police as the incumbent Prakash Aryal will retire after five months.

Along with Aryal, all AIGs will also retire after completing the 30-year service period and the next Inspector General will be selected from Kharel’s batch that also includes DIGs Sarvendra Khanal and Pushkar Karki among others.

Kharel announced his resignation on his Facebook profile today, saying, “… with all my competencies and work experience with the UN, I would like to move on from the UN service and join back Nepal Police, to serve my motherland for the greater cause of the law abiding citizens.”

“Though, my contract was for two years, extendable up to 4 years, I, hereby, announce my resignation from the UN and resume my duty in Nepal with Nepal Police very soon.”
