Kathmandu, October 27
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that Cyclone ‘Montha’, active in the Bay of Bengal, is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm today (Tuesday).
Due to this, heavy rainfall is expected in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, according to the IMD. The department has also issued cyclone warnings for coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and parts of Odisha, anticipating the storm to make landfall along the Andhra coast.
In a statement, the IMD said, “The cyclonic storm may cross the coast between Kakinada and Kalingapatnam, near Machilipatnam, by evening or night.”
During that time, wind speeds are expected to reach 90–100 km per hour. The IMD also predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region between October 28 and 30 due to the cyclone’s influence.
The effects of ‘Montha’ are expected to be felt in Nepal as well. Meteorologists say that the system, which has become active in India, will move into Nepal within a few days.
The system developing in the Bay of Bengal is expected to enter eastern Nepal and become active on Thursday, affecting Koshi Province and extending through Madhesh to central Nepal.
