Ganesh Nepali, who attempted self-immolation, dies during treatment — police

Kathmandu, July 10

Ganesh Nepali, 25, of Soru Rural Municipality-1 in Mugu, who had attempted self-immolation in Tripureshwar, has died during treatment. He had suffered severe burns to around 60 percent of his body and was being treated at Bir Hospital.

Kathmandu Police Range spokesperson Pawan Bhattarai stated that Nepali died during treatment, though the hospital administration has not yet issued official confirmation.

According to Dr Piyush Dahal, coordinator of Bir Hospital’s Department of Plastic Surgery, the fire had caused severe damage to critical parts of his body, including his face, head and neck. As breathing difficulties were observed immediately after he was brought to the hospital, he was intubated in the emergency room and treatment began with him on a ventilator.

A 21-member specialist medical team was deployed for his treatment, led by Dr Piyush Dahal, and including unit chief Dr Apar Lamichhane, critical care specialist Dr Nirman Gyawali, anaesthetist Jai Prakash Thakur, Prof. Dr Ravi Ram Shrestha, and nursing staff.

Nepali had attempted self-immolation by dousing himself with petrol in front of the Department of Passports in Tripureshwar, Kathmandu, on Thursday. He was rescued immediately after the incident and admitted to Bir Hospital.
