World Bank Doing Business report: Nepal improves rank despite some regressive moves

Kathmandu, October 24

The environment of doing business in Nepal has improved in general, but some reforms introduced in the past year are regressive, observes a World Bank study.

In the 2020 Doing Business report made public by the World Bank Group on Thursday, Nepal has been ranked 94th among 190 economies. The country has scored 63.2. In the last year’s report, Nepal had scored 59.7 and was ranked 110th.

In spite of Nepal’s progress in the overall score and ranking, the report has objected that Nepal’s reforms towards the ease of doing business involved both positive and negative moves.

Nepal’s scores in dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, getting credit, trading across borders, and enforcing contracts have improved. On the other hand, the country scores decreased in starting a business, registering property, and paying taxes. The scores in protecting minority investors and resolving insolvency are static since the last year.

The report categorically mentions how the government’s initiatives in these sectors impacted the environment of doing business. For example, it writes, “Nepal made starting a business more difficult by requiring in-person follow-up for employee registration for social security… Nepal made dealing with construction permits easier and less costly by reducing fees for building permits and improving the online e-submissions platform.”
