Kathmandu, April 26

The main opposition CPN-UML on Wednesday continued House obstruction protesting the government’s decision to increase the number of local levels in 11 districts of Terai.

Claiming that the statement given by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local development Kamal Thapa was not satisfactory, lawmakers belonging to the party stood up from their seats, forcing Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar not to continue with the listed business.

Consequently, the Speaker announced that the meeting was adjourned till 3 pm today.

In his clarification, Thapa had said preparations were underway to increase the number of local levels in some districts of Terai in compliance with the government’s agreement with the Madheshi Morcha, which had convinced the agitating parties to take parts in the elections.

He also assured that political parties would be consulted while making the final decision.

The UML, however, stressed that the number should not be changed as the nation has already geared up for the local level elections.

It has been learned that the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development recently sent a letter to 11 districts directing to suggest additions to the local bodies.

Earlier, a meeting was held among top leaders to major parties in a bid to end the obstruction, but it could not make any concrete decision.

The party had obstructed Parliament meeting on Tuesday as well.
