Traders arrested for relabelling goods past expiry dates released without action

Pushpa Devi Agrawal was arrested on the charge of relabelling foodstuffs past their expiry dates, in Kathmandu, on Thursday, October 1, 2020.

Kathmandu, October 4

Six of seven persons arrested on the charge of relabelling food items past expiry dates have been released on a general date without any action.

Officials in the Department of Commerce say they released the suspects without action on Friday as the alleged mastermind, Pushpa Devi Agrawal, cried in front of them, pleading for release.

“She was also ill,” the department’s Director-General Netra Prasad Subuedi informs.

However, they have promised to deposit Rs 10 million as bail on Sunday, according to him.

Of the arrestees, one, identified as Ronak Bothra, an Indian national, is still in custody.

Earlier, on Thursday last week, market monitors had arrested them red-handed while they were attaching fake labels to the goods such as biscuits, chocolates and chips which were already past their expiry dates.
