Tharu artists marked World Music Day with songs of identity and resistance

Kathmandu, June 22

On the occasion of World Music Day, national Tharu artists delivered performances with their original songs at the Nepal Academy in Kamaladi, Kathmandu.

The grand national Tharu cultural program was organized by the National Tharu Artists Forum, where artists from different regions presented performances representing their local cultures.

Resham Chaudhary, patron of the Nagarik Unmukti Party and former Member of Parliament, chaired the event. Speaking at the event, Chaudhary said that he had to serve time in prison for initiating a cultural revolution in pursuit of identity.

He said, “I started my cultural revolution by singing on Radio Nepal in 2049 BS. When the republic was established, they couldn’t tolerate a Tharu son seeking identity through songs. So they imprisoned me. That’s what compelled me to enter politics.”

According to Vijay Chaudhary, General Secretary of the National Tharu Artists Association, Tharu artists from across the country showcased performances reflecting their language, culture, and traditional heritage.

Artists including Bir Chaudhary, Mamata Chaudhary, Vivek Chaudhary, Khem Chaudhary, Manoj Mahato, Sunil Chaudhary, Arya Chaudhary, Nanduraj Chaudhary, and Shiv Chaudhary’s group dances, as well as a performance by Somati Tharu, highlighted the unique cultural expressions in various regional Tharu dialects.
