Supreme Court refuses to release Resham Chaudhary

Controversial lawmaker Resham Chaudhary prepares to take oath, in Kathmandu, on Thursday, January 3, 2019.

Kathmandu, September 7

The Supreme Court of Nepal has refused to issue an order to release Resham Chaudhary, who has been elected a member of the House of Representatives representing Kailali-1.

Chaudhary is in judicial custody in connection with the killing of eight police personnel and a child in Tikapur of Kailali in August 2015.

Chaudhary had filed an appeal to the apex court seeking release. However, a division bench of justices Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada and Purushottam Bhandari refused to issue the order.

The court upheld the orders of Kailali District Court and Dipayal High Court to keep him in judicial custody.

Owing to pressure from his Rastriya Janata Party Nepal, Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara had administered the oath of office and secrecy to him last week.
