RJP-N sets three preconditions to take part in second round of elections

Kathmandu, May 27

The Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal, a newly formed outfit representing major Madhesh-based forces, has laid down three pre-conditions before ‘Prime Minister-in-waiting’ Sher Bahadur Deuba for it to contest the second round of local elections.

The RJP leaders, who met the senior rank of the Nepali Congress at the party office on Saturday, said the government must add local units in the Terai proportionate to the population there, withdraw all cases against people booked during the Madhesh movement, amend the constitution and make arrangements for the RJP to contest the elections as a single political party.

The RJP on Friday announced a series of protests to hamper government preparations for the election.

The ruling coalition said it tried to increase the number of local units in the Terai, but the Supreme Court issued a stay on the move, and the alliance does not command a two-third majority in the House to get the amendment motion sailing.

However, the RJP leaders said it was up to the ruling alliance to change the laws and create a favourable environment for the party to contest elections. The leaders said they cannot take part in the elections until their demands are met.
