Recalled envoy Upadhyaya comes home, challenges govt to prove charges against him

Nepal’s Ambassador to India, Dip Kumar Upadhyaya, returned home on Sunday, after the KP Oli government recalled him accusing him of attempts to topple it.

“But in the official letter sent to me, the government has not pressed any charge against me,” Upadhyaya told journalists upon arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. “The letter only states that you have been relieved of responsibilities given to you,” he said.

The Oli-led ruling coalition had decided to recall Upadhyaya, accusing him of visiting Nepal without informing the government, attending programmes together with India’s Ambassador to Nepal without taking permission and trying to topple the government.

Responding to a query, Upadhyaya challenged the government to prove the charges, adding that he will quit public life if the charges against him are substantiated. He said he will not make political comments without meeting the prime minister first.

“Nepal-India relations are not like a card game in which one side loses when another side wins,” Upadhyaya said.
