Police arrest man with fake banknotes of Rs 151,000 face value from Kathmandu

In one of the biggest fake banknote hauls of past few years, police in Kathmandu have arrested a man with fake Nepali banknotes of Rs 151,000 face value from Gongabu of Kathmandu on Saturday night.

The suspect has been identified as Om Bahadur Kunwar Chhetri.

Inspector Mohan Bikram KC, Chief of the Gongabu-based Metropolitan Police Range, says police seized 151 banknotes of Rs 1,000 denomination from his possession.

Acting on a tipoff, the Range had mobilised a patrol team in Happy Home Tole of Gongabu last night. Raiding an apartment, they had seized the banknotes.

Meanwhile, another suspect involved in the crime, identified as Hikmat Kunwar, is on the run and police are searching him.

Police say they also seized 50 passports from the victims’ possession. Therefore, police will also forward the case to the Department of Foreign Employment for further probe.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were foreign employment recruitment agents; and they collected the passports from potential migrant workers.
