People’s Socialist Party warns of protest over naturalised citizenship threshold

People’s Socialist Party Nepal leader Mahendra Raya Yadav speaks in Parliament.

Kathmandu, June 23

The People’s Socialist Party Nepal has warned of launching a street protest across the country if the ruling Nepal Communist Party does not withdraw its decision of introducing a seven-year threshold for foreign women marrying Nepali citizens for their naturalised citizenship.

Backed by the NCP, the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee in Parliament has already endorsed the bill to amend the Citizenship Act and the House of Representatives will soon discuss it.

In this context, PSPN leader Mahendra Raya Yadav spoke in the House meeting today and said the decision was against an agreement that the government signed with the then Madhesi Morcha during the Madhes movement some years back.

Hence, if the party would not be back from its stance, Yadav said, “We understand that they want us to go to the streets for a protest again.”
