Parties’ show of power, Biplav’s activities major security threats for polls: Nepal govt

The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Election Commission have identified political parties’ show of power in the run-up to elections and anti-poll activities likely to be carried out by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplab’-led CPN Maoist as major threats to security for upcoming provincial and federal parliamentary elections.

They have analysed that the parties contesting the polls may use money and gangsters in their campaigning, which may pose threats to peace and order.

“Security is just like oxygen. When you lack it, your life is at risk,” Election Commissioner Ishwari Prasad Paudel said while addressing security officials of provinces 4 and 5 in Pokhara today, “During the time of elections, security threats can occur at any moment. Elections cannot be fair for the want of reliable security.”

Meanwhile, a special regional security seminar has begun in Pokhara today. The seminal will create security strategies targeting elections in provinces 4 and 5.

Besides Paudel, Home Secretary Mohan Krishna Sapkota also addressed the seminar, saying there could be some greater security challenges in the run-up to polls.

Officials of 17 districts are taking part at the event.
