Kathmandu, August 24
At least 30 people have been killed and 22 others injured after a large pile of waste collapsed and buried nearby houses following heavy rainfall in Conakry, the capital of Guinea.
Six of the injured are in critical condition.
The incident occurred at around 2 am local time in the Dar-es-Salam area of the city. According to the Guinean government, a large pile of waste suddenly collapsed following heavy rainfall. Many people are feared to remain trapped under the debris.
The government has deployed a large number of security personnel, including members of the military, for rescue and relief operations.
Speaking to local media, a woman said, “Five of my children died.” Authorities fear that more people may still be trapped under the debris and that the death toll could rise.
Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah visited the site and assessed the situation.
Earlier, local leader Lancine Sylla told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that a large number of people were feared to have been affected by the incident.
He said 18 bodies had so far been recovered and sent to the morgue.
