The government has tightened regulations after trekking companies began selling “overnight stay packages” at Everest Base Camp during the climbing season.
The Department of Tourism said it has taken serious note of advertisements by some trekking agencies promoting such packages. According to the Mountaineering Regulation 2059 (2002), only members of expedition teams, sirdars, mountain guides, high-altitude workers, base camp staff, and local workers are allowed to stay at the base camp without prior approval from the department.
The regulation also mandates that liaison officers are responsible for enforcing these rules. Currently, the Department of Tourism has set up a temporary field office at Everest Base Camp to oversee monitoring and facilitation.
The department has warned that any activities violating these provisions will invite strict action.
