Kathmandu, November 6

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority says it has launched an investigation into reports of amassing property by illegal means and the probe may involve as many as 200 government officials including retired and current ones.

A source at the Commission says the list included 40 government engineers, 20 top security officials and five secretaries. Likewise, there are 20 doctors and chiefs of key government corporations.

“We have already started recording statements from them and the process is underway,” the source says, “Others will be summoned very soon.”

Earlier, the Commission had set up its own intelligence agency to collect information about the officials. The Commission had listed around 1,500 officials in the beginning, and 500 were shortlisted from them. The 200 who are being probed in the first step are from the shortlist.

Just on Sunday, former Nepali Police Inspector General Upendra Kanta Aryal and former Secretary Gajendra Kumar Thakur were summoned for the statements.

Former Chief Secretary Rajendra Kishore Kshatri, former Secretary Bishwa Prakash Pandit and Secretary Arjun Karki were also summoned over their alleged involvement in embezzlement while purchasing electricity transformers.
