New CJ Parajuli assumes office, pledges judicial reforms

Kathmandu, July 17

Newly appointed Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli on Monday took the oath of office and secrecy from President Bidya Devi Bhandari.

After the oath ceremony at the Sheetal Niwal, Parajuli directly went to the Supreme Court in Singhadarbar and assumed his office.

The Court officials had welcomed the new CJ with bouquets.

Speaking with journalists after assuming office, Parajuli said he would implement a 39-point plan during his tenure for reforms in Nepal’s judiciary.’

He added that he would ask justices to work overtime so as to deliver justice on time.

Parajuli said he would implement recommendations made by various committees for reforms in the court.

Acting upon a recommendation from the Constitutional Council, the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee had endorsed his name for the appointment on Sunday.

Parajuli had been working as Acting Chief Justice at the Supreme Court since his predecessor Sushila Karki’s retirement in June first week.

The 27th Chief Justice of the country will hold the top office till April 27, 2018, when he reaches the age of 65 years.
