Nepali Congress students demand Home Minister’s resignation over Banke tension

A protest rally of Nepali Congress student wing, Nepal Students Union, in Kathmandu, on Monday, December 9, 2019.

Kathmandu, December 9

The student wing of the main opposition party, Nepali Congress, has demanded that Minister for Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa resign claiming responsibility of the suppression of a peaceful protest launched by students of Kohalpur in Banke district on Sunday.

After a truck hit injured a schoolgirl in the city yesterday morning, the local school students had obstructed the road and staged a demonstration. In their bid to resume the obstructed traffic, police had baton-charged the demonstrators. Some police personnel and students were injured in the clash.

A day after the incident, the opposition party’s Nepal Students Union staged a rally in Kathmandu, demanding the minister’s resignation.

Speaking at the demonstration in Chabahil of Kathmandu today, NSU leader Manoj Baidya also demanded that the government provide free treatment to the students injured in the clash yesterday.
