Mayors, deputy mayors and other local representatives from the Nepali Congress have clarified to the central leadership that they haven’t increased tax rates in their cities and villages.

The representatives, who were taking part in a training organised by the party on Monday, said they don’t intend to trouble the people by unduly hiking tax rates.

“We don’t want to trouble the people,” said Lalitpur Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan adding that his city did not receive adequate budget from the centre during the current fiscal. “We also don’t want to trouble the people with high tax rates,” said Kathmandu Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi.

Waling Municipality Deputy Mayor Kalpana Tiwari and Ram Gram Mayor Narendra Gupta also said that taxes in their respective cities have been determined as per the law.

The representatives were responding to comments from the party leadership that local bodies should not hike taxes based on their whims.
