In the minority, Lalitpur mayor fails to convince city council about annual policy

Lalitpur Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan

Kathmandu, July 11

Just five days are left before the new fiscal year will begin. But, Lalitpur Metropolitan City is yet to endorse its annual policy and programme for the next fiscal year.

Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan and his deputy Gita Satyal have failed to convince the city council to endorse the annual policy document as representatives of Nepal Communist Party did not approve the budget.

The NCP holds the majority in the city council whereas Maharjan and Satyal’s Nepali Congress is in the minority. Maharjan was elected the mayor by a thin margin of 365 votes during the 2017 elections.

Mayor Maharjan had presented the annual policy and programme on May 24. Since then, the council convened its meeting at least five times.

But, every meeting failed to endorse the document owing to a protest by the NCP leaders.

Meanwhile, the next council meeting has been called for coming Sunday. Meanwhile, Maharjan says he is hopeful that the next meeting would endorse the document.
