Kathmandu, August 14

Police on Sunday detained 11 protesters while they were staging a protest outside Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar calling the Nepali state to come to the rescue of Ganga Maya Adhikari, who has been staging a hunger strike for four days.

The detainees are members of the Save Ganga Maya Campaign. They include Charan Prasain, Krishna Hari Aryal, Shobha Maharjan, Bhoj Raj Chapagain, Bachchu Rijal, Indra Aryal, Rabin Basnet, Suman Adhikari, Sabitri Shrestha, Rashana Dhakal and Sushila Sharma.

They are in the custody of Kamalpokhari Police Circle.

Ganga Maya has been seeking legal action against those involved in the murder of her son Krishna Prasad Adhikari during the decade-long Maoist insurgency. Her husband and Krishna’s father, Nanda Prasad Adhikari, lost his life in course of the fast he had staged to press for action against the killers. The Adhikari couple’s another son has gone out of contact. Nanda Prasad’s body has been lying unclaimed at the morgue of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.

Ganga Maya and her supporters have been continuing with their movement, though government has already formed a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to deal with conflict-era cases and compensate the victims.

Prasain told Onlinekhabar: With Ganga Maya’s health deteriorating, we had started a sit-in demanding protection of her life. While we were staging the protest, police came, told us we cannot stage a sit-in (outside PM’s official residence) and brought 11 of us here (in Kamalpokhari).

‘The government has issued a prohibitory order barring all concerned from staging protests around PM’s official residence.’
