The government on Wednesday has decided to extend the lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus outbreak in the country until May 18.

The nationwide lockdown is in effect in the country from March 24. After repeated extensions, it was expiring Thursday, but the cabinet meeting held this afternoon decided to extend it by 11 days.

Of late, the public has been demanding that the lockdown be relaxed in the areas which are relatively safe. Officials had also devised a plan to categorise the districts into red, yellow, and green zones and adopt different restriction measures. However, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli did not believe that idea, according to a member of the high-level coronavirus control committee.

“He had two reasons,” a minister says, “One, the status of increasing infection in India is dangerous and it will have an impact on Nepal. The next, we have not conducted sufficient tests.”
