Nepal biggest hub for Indian Mujahideen, claims US

Kathmandu, November 5

A US government report claims that Nepal is the biggest hub for Indian Mujahedeen, which has been designated a foreign terrorist organisation by the US since September 2011. Indian Mujahedeen is a terrorist group that maintains close ties with terror groups like including Pakistan-based Lashkar e-Tayyiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Harakat ul-Jihad Islami.

“Indian Mujahedeen has also expanded its area of operations into Nepal, which is now the biggest hub for Indian Mujahedeen operatives,” states the 2018 Country Reports on Terrorism. The report was released a few weeks back.

The India-based terrorist group is responsible for dozens of bomb attacks throughout India since 2005 and has caused the deaths of hundreds of civilians.

The report also mentions that Nepal’s airport security is weak and inadequate as it does not pre-screen passengers and landing data are not entered into any database.

“Physical security checks of passengers are rudimentary. There is no travel document security and the airport lacks ultraviolet lights to examine documents,” states the report

The report states that the inflow of terrorists might have increased due to Nepal’s open border with India and insufficient security protocols at the country’s sole international airport in Kathmandu.

The report, however, has highlighted that there have been no international terrorism incidents in 2018. But it does mention domestic explosions in Nepal carried out by the Biplav Maoists.
