Naagdhunga locals to obstruct road tunnel project

Kathmandu, November 17

Locals of Naagdhunga area in Kathmandu have warned that they will obstruct the Naagdhunga-Naubise road tunnel project that the Department of Roads plans to begin soon.

After the government issued a notice in the name of locals to claim compensation for their land, the locals of Gurjudhara and Tutipakha have formed a ‘struggle committee’ to launch phase-wise protests against the project.

Locals say the government did not consult them while preparing the plan for project. They claim the road does not provide any advantage to them.

They say the road is being made quite curvy so as to meet interests of land mafias.

“If the tunnel was straight enough, it would end at Sitapaila. Earlier, it was said that it would pass through Sitapaila,” local Ravi Shrestha, who heads the struggle committee, says, “But, it is being taken to Gurjudhara owing to pressures from land mafias. But we will not make it a success.”

He claims the initial environmental evaluation for the project was also wrongly done.
