Film Development Board chairman dead

The chairman of the Film Development Board Nepal, Keshav Bhattarai, died on Sunday night. After he experienced some problems in his health, the family rushed him to Om Hospital in Chabil, but he breathed his last one the way, according to family sources. The exact cause of his death, however, is not known yet.

Bhattarai was active in the Nepali cinema industry, as a producer and an actor, for the past three decades. He was appointed the chairman of the industry’s governing body earlier this year. His last production was ‘Yatra’ released this year.

The family informs that his last rites will be performed in Kathmandu on Monday afternoon.

NCP not satisfied with govt performance

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s own party has commented that the Oli government could not make substantial progress in good governance and corruption control. In the standing committee meeting of Nepal Communist Party, the party’s executive chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal tabled an 11-page political report, which states, “The government’s good works could not reach the people due to the lack of party committees for a long time. Neither could the party take a leading role to save the government from various mistakes.”

Listing seven achievements of the government, the report also presents a six-point recommendation to improve its performance.

Sindhupalchok bus accident: Driver out of contact

The driver of the bus that fell around 500 metres down the road in Sunkoshi rural municipality of Sindhupalchok district on Sunday morning is out of contact. The District Police Office says it has launched a mission to find Suman Tamang for further investigation.

While 13 persons were reportedly killed in the accident initially, the death toll has already reached 15.

Witnesses say the driver had jumped off the falling vehicle from a window, and no one knows where he went to.

Govt says it’s unable to meet demands of disgruntled officials

The government has clarified that it cannot meet the demands of the employees protesting their recent adjustment at local and provincial government bodies. A few hours after the staff submitted a memorandum to the concerned officials demanding that the government stop recruiting new staff for the federal level and fill the vacancies with them first, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration has said the staff were sent to provincial and local levels as per the law and they cannot be transferred back to the federal government to fill existing vacancies.

“Their demand cannot be met as per the law,” Bhupal Baral, the spokesperson at the ministry, says.

Kathmandu city’s drive to provide shelter to the homeless

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City says it will launch a three-month-long campaign in an effort to make the capital city free of homeless people. In the campaign, the city government will provide shelter to the homeless in partnership with a local humanitarian NGO. After the three months, the city will announce itself as a ‘homeless-free city’.

The city made the announcement during a function organised on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in Kathmandu on Sunday. “If you find anyone helpless on the street, inform us immediately,” KMC mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya said, “Everyone needs to support this campaign. The media professionals’ role is more important.”

Bharatpur Metropolitan City in Chitwan has already been announced homeless-free.
