Kathmandu, September 23
It will take yet another week for the monsoon to subside in Nepal, authorities say.
Even though the rainy season normally comes to by mid-September, monsoon clouds in the past few years have remained active for longer periods, meteorologists say.
Meteorologist Samir Shrestha said, “The wind shifts from west to east when the monsoon clouds leave Nepal. But this has not happened now. The wind is still blowing west. So, the monsoon will last at least one week more.”
More than 70 per cent of rainfall in Nepal takes place during the monsoon, which sets in on June 10 and leaves around September 23. However, this year it started only on June 20, ten days later than normal.
According to Shrestha, last year, the monsoon lasted until October 5. Monsoon is considered to have ended after 90 per cent of the weather stations throughout the country record zero rainfall for three or four days in a row.
