Minister Khatiwada says many statistics are ‘guessed’

Yuba Raj Khatiwada

Kathmandu, December 12

Minister for Finance Yuba Raj Khatiwada has commented that many statistics about the country’s economic development are not based on well-conducted research, but they are just guesswork.

Speaking at a function organised by the World Bank to launch the latest edition of Nepal Development Update, the minister, however, said the government was working towards strengthening the data system. A new statistic act will be issued soon, according to him.

He said Nepal was calculating its data considering 2000/2001 as the base year till now, but the government was changing it to 2008/2009.

During the programme, the World Bank shared its estimation that Nepal would achieve an economic growth rate of 7.1 per cent this year. It said the growth rate would heavily depend on the monsoon and service industries.
