Lockdown leaves Chitwan dairy farmers lamenting

File: Dairy farmers in Chitwan

Chitwan, March 30

The ongoing lockdown imposed by the government in its bid to control the coronavirus outbreak in the country has left dozens of dairy farmers in Chitwan district in a loss.

Whereas the consumers have found it difficult to visit the market and buy daily essentials including the dairy products, the farmers here have lamented their inability to sell milk.

“We cannot tell our cows not to give us milk because it’s a lockdown,” Hari Chapagain, a farmer in Kesharbag Chok Bajaar, Bharatpur-6 of the district, says, “We have to milk the cows regularly. We also have to feed them grass, water, and other feeds”

The farmers have also complained that the district authorities did not address their concerns in this period. Rishi Ram Chapagain, the chairperson of Annapurna Milk Producer Cooperative, says the government should facilitate the smooth transportation of milk as it is also an essential daily consumable.

Chitwan district produces around 300,000 litres of milk every day and almost half of it is consumed in the district.
