Members of Parliament have called for the formation of a special committee to address concerns of Madhesh-centric parties.

These parties have been boycotting the Parliament for months, the lawmakers noted, adding: The House should take this boycott seriously. It should take steps to resolve the crisis.

At Thursday’s meeting of the House, lawmakers, including Shyam Shrestha and Janak Raj Joshi, aired their views. They said the government does not appear to have taken concrete steps to address Madhesh-centric parties’ concerns. Therefore, Speaker should constitute a special committee for talks, they said.

The lawmakers said the Parliament should appoint a facilitator, if need be, to start talks with disgruntled parties and arrive at a conclusion.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the constitution of Nepal, which a popularly-elected Constituent Assembly had promulgated with an overwhelming majority, the Madhesh-centric parties have been boycotting the Parliament for nine months.

They continued the boycott on Thursday as well, accusing the KP Sharma Oli government of not showing seriousness towards their major demand — redrawing of provincial boundaries.
