IGP appointment: Ramesh Kharel to quit, Pushkar Karki okay with decision

Kathmandu, April 11

Following the government decision to promote DIG Sarbendra Khanal to the position of Inspector General of Nepal Police, one of the contenders for the post says he will quit.

The Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday evening had made the decision, killing aspirations of Ramesh Kharel and Pushkar Karki.

Kharel now says working as a DIG under Khanal makes him feel humiliated, therefore he is going to quit today. Karki, however, says he is okay with the government decision.

Kharel accuses the government of breaching the system to block him from the top position. “I was on the mission to become the IGP; but now left with humiliation, I cannot work.”

He, however, says he will not launch any legal battle against the decision, but will cooperate with the new leadership from outside.

In 2017, the government decision to appoint Jaya Bahadur Chand to the top post was challenged by his batch mate Nawa Raj Silwal and subsequently revoked by the Supreme Court. However, Silwal himself was dragged into a forgery case.

On the other hand, Pushkar Karki says he accepts the government decision and continues with the duty.

“I worked for such long years with professional devotion and I am yet to do before I retire,” he says, “What government decides is a different story, but I have to do what I can.”

“I will work for police and support the IGP.”

Meanwhile, newly appointed IGP Khanal requested Kharel not to quit and work together.

“We were competitors, but our mission was same. I request you to work together to strengthen Nepal Police and to serve the country.”
