Kathmandu, July 17
A day after the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority filed an embezzlement case against the suspended chief of Inland Revenue Department, Chudamani Sharma, for his role at the Tax Settlement Commission, the Finance Committee in Parliament on Monday directed the government to annul a law that formed the Commission.
The Committee chair and CPN-UML lawmaker Prakash Jwala says the government has been directed to scrap the Tax Settlement Commission Act, 1976, as activities of the Commission are found involving corruption and embezzlement.
Likewise, the Act contradicts with the constitution as it says no question can be raised against activities of the Commission at any court, Jwala adds.
Before issuing the directive, the Committee had consulted Revenue Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, Shishir Kumar Dhungana.
The Act made in 1976 has not been amended yet.
