Government assures to reconstruct quake-hit monasteries at the earliest

Buddhist monks stage a protest demanding reconstruction of quake-hit monasteries, in Lalitpur, on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

Kathmandu, July 27

After Buddhist monks took to the streets demanding early reconstruction of monasteries, vihars and shrines destroyed in the earthquake of April 2015, the government has assured that it will rebuild the structures with religious and cultural significance at the earliest.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development, Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, says the government is committed to promoting Buddhism and bring more tourists to study Buddhist culture in Nepal.

Speaking at a function organised by the Buddhist Philosophy Promotion and Monastery Development Committee in Kathmandu today, Gachhadar said, “I express my commitment to analyse the losses and take necessary efforts to rebuild them as soon as possible.”

The government records show that as many as 1,318 monasteries and vihars were destroyed by the quake.

Meanwhile, the Monastery Development Committee said it was also actively working for early reconstruction.
