The Chobhar dry port is struggling to accommodate the high number of imported vehicles, particularly electric vehicles (EVs), amid rumours of a potential customs tax hike in the upcoming budget.
In anticipation of increased duties, importers have rushed to bring in EVs and two-wheelers, causing congestion at the dry port and customs office.
Ashish Gajurel, Executive Director of the Nepal Intermodal Transport Development Board, said EV imports have surged since February. “Over 1,000 EV units are currently parked at Chobhar dry port, and more are arriving daily,” he said.
According to customs officials, the volume of vehicle imports seen recently is unprecedented. Some vehicles have yet to clear customs, further straining storage capacity.
