Jamaican American DJ Walshy Fire, who is part of the musical group Major Lazer, alongside DJs like Diplo and Ape Drums, is currently in Nepal.

Walshy Fire, on Tuesday, engaged with young and aspiring music producers and DJs who want to pursue a career in music.

The 47-year-old DJ and music producer shared career advice and reflected on his early struggles during the dialogue series ‘Khulaun Bolaun’, organised by the US Embassy, Kathmandu, in collaboration with Club LOD.

“If you want to succeed in music, don’t look for money,” he said. “I never followed money and don’t work for it. I do what makes me happy and that has always been the case.”

Reflecting on his journey, Walshy Fire recounted starting his DJ career for just USD 50 a night, stressing the long struggle he endured over nearly a decade to reach his current position.

“It was a constant struggle. I had no mentor or producer. It was just me trying to get better at what I did,” he said.

Walshy Fire says his life took a turn when he landed a job at a radio station in Miami, where he hosted a talk show. Through his radio work, he crossed paths with Diplo, a key moment that changed his course.

“It was through the radio that I met Diplo. I toiled hard for 10 years, and that was only because I loved what I did,” he said.

Walshy Fire advised Nepali youth aspiring to start DJing to maintain a true love for music, regardless of life’s challenges.

“DJs don’t have a retirement plan. We are on our own and if we fall down, there won’t be people to pick us up,” he said. “You have to be self-reliant and need to keep believing in yourself.”

Walshy Fire encouraged DJs and producers in attendance to maintain a positive outlook on life and avoid fixating on the negatives.

“You will face hurdles, but always remember these are tests for better things to come in the future,” he said. “Accept the hard days and keep moving forward. Life will improve.”

He recalled an event he held in Miami where he played in an empty hall for nearly five hours.

“I love music. I love DJing. That is what kept me going. If you want to be a DJ, you have to prepare yourself for the tough times as well,” he said.

Walshy Fire never wanted to become a huge name and says success in music comes when people work in a team.

“That is what you need. A good team behind you and if you all work hard, success will come your way,” he said.

Walshy Fire is playing at Club LOD on Wednesday night.
