Coliform found in 65 per cent drinking water in Lalitpur

Kathmandu, July 5

Coliform bacteria have been found in around 65 per cent samples of drinking water collected from various parts of Lalitpur district recently, says the District Public Health Office.

Coliforms are primary cause of cholera.

This ratio, however, is lower than the contamination recorded last year.

Last year, of 180 samples collected from various areas of the district, total 156 samples were contaminated with coliform, according to the DPHO.

DPHO’s lab technician Shankar Paudel says the mixture of drinking water with sewage during installation of water pipes in Satdobato, Chapagaun and Sunakothi areas caused the contamination.

The Office has warned that drinking water without boiling may result into cholera infection.

Paudel also suggests that the water tanks or wells should be at least 30 metres away from septic tanks to prevent contamination.

Meanwhile, cholera has already been seen in three persons in the district after the onset of monsoon this year, according to the DPHO.

“We have adopted special measures to prevent any death from cholera this year,” says Jhalak Sharma Paudel, Chief of the DPHO.
