Cabinet fails to name new Nepal Police chief

Kathmandu, February 10

Though the incumbent Nepal Police Inspector General Sarbendra Khanal is going on home leave on Tuesday a few days ahead of his retirement, the government did not name his successor on Monday.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had scheduled a Cabinet meeting this afternoon and it was expected to pick the new police chief as Khanal is leaving the office. However, the meeting did not make any decision in this regard, according to a source. The source says the next Cabinet meeting to be held later this week will name the new police chief.

As all the additional inspectors general are also retiring along with Khanal, the government will pick one between DIG Thakur Gyawali and DIG Tarini Prasad Lamsal to lead the organisation. Gyawali or Lamsal will also retire after around five months due to the 30-year service rule.
