Bharatpur vote count halted as Gyawali, Dahal are neck and neck

(L-R) Renu Dahal and Devi Gyawali

Chitwan, May 28

The counting of votes in the Bharatpur Metropolitan City of Chitwan district has been halted on Sunday afternoon again as parties had a dispute over seal numbers of some ballot boxes.

The seal numbers noted in papers were found to be different from those marked on the boxes from ward 19.

The votes from two wards–19 and 20–are yet to be counted and two front-runners are neck and neck in the race.

Devi Gyawali of the CPN-UML is ahead of Renu Dahal of the CPN-Maoist Centre with a difference of just 784 votes.

Gyawali has received 40,980 votes against 40,196 of Dahal.

Meanwhile, it has been already certain that Nepali Congress candidate Parvati Shah is winning the race for Deputy Mayor of the City.

While total 6,162 votes are yet to be counted, Shah is ahead of her closest rival Divya Sharma Acharya of the CPN-UML with a difference of more than 6,300 votes.

Shah has garnered 44,079 votes against 37,680 of Acharya.

A discussion is underway among party representatives to resume the halted counting.

Full results from the metropolis are expected by Monday morning.
