Life as a vegetarian can be quite tough in Kathmandu if you like eating out. Firstly, the number of dishes available at normal restaurants are few and far between. Secondly, those that are available can get quite boring after a while.

Even though there are quite a few ‘pure vegetarian’ restaurants that also work as a sweet shop, they tend to be quite inconsistent with food as their prime focus tends to be sweets.

Today, we bring to you a list of vegetarian restaurants in the valley apart from places like Sajangoth, Angan and Sangam Sweets, which offers a menu that will spoil you for choices:

1. OR2K

Given the place has been around for over two decades, it is hard to argue that it is Kathmandu’s best vegetarian restaurant. Serving vegetarian middle-eastern food along with continental and East Asian in a rustic atmosphere, OR2K will keep you coming back for more. Dunking falafels, nan bread and focaccia into their hummus or trying its pasta or crepes, you can’t go wrong at OR2K.

Pro tip – go for the falafel wrap.

Utpala Cafe is a unique restaurant. Run by Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery, a Buddhist monastery, the not-for-profit restaurant’s food menu is entirely vegetarian except for a few egg dishes. There are not a lot of food options, but the ones that are there are good enough to warrant your visit. Its breakfast options are great as you can either try their lentil patties or apple crumble pie. Nice and spacious, it is a place you should go to at least once. Its buffets are quite famous too.
