Kathmandu, August 10
According to Meteorologists the monsoon will remain active for another couple of days, with the possibility of heavier rainfall concentrated in eastern Nepal.
According to Govinda Jha, meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, there is a higher likelihood of more rainfall on Tuesday compared to today and Monday.
“The monsoon is still active and more concentrated in the east,” he said to Onlinekhabar. “Compared to today and tomorrow, there is a good chance of heavier rainfall the day after tomorrow.”
Since the start of the monsoon, most areas have experienced light to moderate rain. The Terai, however, faced a prolonged dry spell. But since the beginning of August, rainfall has been occurring across the country. Meteorologists say that in the coming days, both the amount and coverage of rainfall are expected to increase.
Associate Professor Dr. Binod Pokharel of Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said that rainfall will increase in some areas starting this evening, with heavy rainfall likely in many places until Wednesday. He stated that heavy rains will begin in the east and are expected to reach the west by Wednesday.
He wrote on Facebook: “Rainfall will increase in some areas from this evening. Heavy rainfall is likely in many places until Wednesday, with a possibility of torrential rainfall in some areas.”
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the monsoon trough is currently located north of its average position. Meteorologist Jha said they are closely monitoring the situation and will issue a special bulletin if there is a clear indication of very heavy rainfall.
“Weather forecast models are constantly being updated, so we are watching closely,” he said. “It is still too early to say exactly how much rain will fall.”
The department said that the seasonal radar in Udayapur has detected moderate to heavy rainfall in areas such as Hardinath and Tulsi in Dhanusha district, and Parwanipur in Sarlahi district. Since the weather system in these areas is moving southwest, the department has urged the public to take necessary precautions.
In the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall was recorded at Tulsi station in Dhanusha with 111 millimeters, followed by Parwanipur with 92 millimeters.
This afternoon, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast a possibility of moderate rainfall in some areas of the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. A few places in the hilly and Terai regions of Madhesh Province and other parts of the country are also likely to experience moderate rain.
Tonight, moderate rainfall is likely in some areas of the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces, as well as in a few places in the hilly and Terai regions of the remaining provinces. Heavy rainfall is also possible in one or two places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.
