Dhangadhi, July 4

Tension ran high in Mangalsen, the district headquarters of Achham in Sudurpaschim, on Monday afternoon as locals and police clashed.

Locals staged protests outside the District Government Attorney’s Office and the District Court, accusing the attorney’s office of trying to protect the suspects in a murder case.

In retaliation, the police lobbed tear gas shells and opened fire in the air, injuring some of the demonstrators.

The family members of Binod Shahi (15), a resident of ward 4 of the Panchadewal Binayak municipality, have filed a complaint naming 13 people including Mayor Ambika Chalaune as culprits.

Shahi was missing since May 31 when a clash ensued between the cadres of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML over a violent incident that occurred during the local election voting day (May 13). He was found dead five days later.

Police have arrested seven persons including Chalaune in connection with the case.
