Achham mayor arrested for murder during election-related violence

Dhangadhi, July 3

Police in the Achham district of Sudurpaschim have arrested Ambika Chalaune, the mayor of the Panchadewal Binayak municipality in the district, for her alleged involvement in a murder.

DIG Mohan Kumar Acharya, the chief of the Sudurpaschim Provincial Police Office, says Chalaune and one more person have been arrested on the charge as the sixth and seventh suspects of the case. Police have already arrested five other persons in connection with the Achham murder reportedly committed on May 31.

The family members of Binod Shahi (15), a resident of ward 4 of the municipality, have filed a complaint naming 13 people including Mayor Chalaune as culprits.

Shahi was missing since May 31 when a clash ensued between the cadres of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML over a violent incident that occurred during the local election voting day (May 13). Later, he was found dead.
