The Election Commission has estimated that the upcoming House of Representatives election, scheduled for March 5 (Falgun 21), will cost around Rs 7.5 billion.
As part of preparations for the upcoming polls, the Commission has prepared a preliminary budget estimate. However, the final figure has yet to be confirmed. Once finalised, the Commission plans to forward the proposed budget to the Ministry of Finance.
Commission spokesperson Suman Ghimire said the budget is still under preparation. “The estimated cost stands at around Rs 7.5 billion, but the final decision has not been made yet,” he said.
List of election materials being prepared
While preparing the budget, the Commission is also compiling a list of materials required for the election. It has urged that the procurement of necessary materials begin immediately after the Chhath festival.
Discussions with the Ministry of Finance are ongoing regarding this matter. The Commission plans to purchase additional materials while also reusing available ones.
Helicopter arrangement for Himalayan regions
In addition to procurement, the Commission plans to allocate a portion of the budget for emergency management. This includes the potential use of helicopters to transport election staff and materials in Himalayan regions where difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions may pose challenges.
The Commission aims to mobilise personnel and deliver materials during clear weather windows.
One polling center for every 1,000 voters
The Commission is preparing to establish one polling center for every 1,000 voters, continuing past practice. Most of the expenditure will go toward managing election personnel.
Each polling center will require at least 14 staff members, along with additional personnel for vote counting.
