Kathmandu, February 28
After the parliament ratified the controversial MCC grant deal on Sunday, nearly five years after signing it with the United States government, the US government says Nepal now can work towards implementing the deal.
Hours after the ratification of the deal, the US Embassy in Kathmandu issued a statement and said, “The Nepali government will now be able to continue to work towards implementing the five-year programme.”
The statement says the implementation of the programme will result in “more jobs for the Nepali people, a reliable supply of electricity, and lower transportation costs.”
The embassy assures, “The United States’ relationship with Nepal is broader than one agreement and we will continue to support the country and its democratic values and long-term economic prosperity.”
Yet, the statement does not mention anything about the 12-point interpretative declaration that the parliament ratified while endorsing the US government’s MCC grant deal.
