Central Zoo at Jawalakhel reopens

Red panda dies after surviving two attempted thefts from Lalitpur zoo

Lalitpur, July 17

The Central Zoo has been reopened to the general public from today. The zoo, located at Jawalakhel in Lalitpur, was closed from June 19 after bird flu was confirmed in crows, vultures, ducks and other birds on the zoo premises. The central zoo has been reopened after the ‘environmental samples’ of birds tested negative for the bird flu virus.

According to the zoo administration, a meeting held among senior officials of the Department of Livestock Services, Central Veterinary Laboratory and Epidemiology and Disease Control Division on Thursday decided to reopen the zoo to the general public. Spokesperson and Information Officer of the zoo, Ganesh Koirala, said the Central Zoo would remain open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm for entry, while the visitors should exit the zoo by 5 pm.

The zoo administration has urged the visitors to maintain distance from animals and birds. Similarly, the general public has been requested not to consume food brought with them in open areas, to dispose of waste properly in the dustbins, and to mandatorily wear a face mask.
