The nationwide lockdown imposed to control the coronavirus outbreak in the country has reduced the amount of milk and milk products consumed in the Nepali market to a half.

Consequently, around 20,000 dairy farmers and traders dependent on the milk market have been hit hard, informs Radha Krishna Sapkota, the chairperson of the Nepal Dairy Association.

Babu Kaji Panta, the deputy executive chief of the National Dairy Development Board, says the market consumption has halved as party venues, hotels, restaurants, canteens, and other eateries are closed.

During this season last year, Nepali farmers had sold more than one million metric tonnes of milk to the Nepali market. This year, the amount has been reduced to a half-million metric tonnes, according to him. Panta says that the government-run Dairy Development Corporation and private milk processing companies have also reported around a 50-percent decrease during the lockdown.
