Private school organisation warns of disobeying new law on compulsory education

PABSON President Bijaya Sambahamphe

Kathmandu, September 17

The Private and Boarding Schools’ Organisation Nepal (PABSON) has warned of disobeying the new law on compulsory education.

The Federal Parliament has recently endorsed the Bill on Compulsory and Free Education, and it is awaiting the President’s approval for implementation.

The organisation says the bill, if implemented as it is, will destroy the business of private schools.

Among others, the new law will require private schools to educate a certain percent of its students free of cost. The schools do not have a right to select such students. Therefore, the school operators say the law is not practical and scientific.

Organising a press conference in Kathmandu today, the organisation’s President Bijaya Sambahamphe says the school operators will shut down their institutions if the government does not address their concern.

Claiming the bill was finalised without any consultation with the private sector, PABSON has also warned of staging a protest demanding its amendment.
