Kathmandu, May 8

Every year on Mother’s Day, the Matatirtha Kund located in Chandragiri Municipality-6 of Kathmandu is crowded with devotees and pilgrims.

Those who do not have a mother go to Matatirtha the day before Aunsi (no moon day), light a lamp in memory of their mother, stay awake take a bath in the pool in the morning and offer tarpan. Devotees visit the statue of the mother and offer flowers and offerings.

It has been believed that taking a bath in Matatirtha will free the children from the debt owed to their mother. With this belief, every year on Baisakh Krishna Paksha Aunsi, those who pay respect to the birth mother visit the Mata Tirtha. On the occasion of Mata Tirtha Mela, a public holiday has been given throughout Chandragiri Municipality today.

The day of showering love to the mother is also known as Mother’s Day. On this day, it is customary to offer favourite food, give clothes and other gifts to the mother and take blessings.
Those who are far away from their mother call for blessings. Nowadays, there is an increase in the trend of showing respect by placing a picture of the mother on social media. Here are some photographs of Matatirtha Mela:
