Nepal unlikely to recognise Rohingya as refugees

The Nepal government is not willing to give the status of refugees to Rohingya people residing in the country though the number of such people fleeing from Myanmar has already cross the mark of 650.

A source at the Ministry of Home Affairs says the government is unlikely to recognise other people except Bhutanese and Tibetans as refugees.

Therefore the government has not made any effort to count the number of Rohingya living in the country though media reports have already informed that they are residing in various districts.

The Nepal office of United Nations agency for refugees, UNHCR, says around 650 Rohingya are living in Nepal. The UN agency recognises them as urban refugees, though the government has been calling it not to recognise them.

Rohingyas are Muslims from Rakhine state of Myanmar who have been facing torture and brutality from the state and local Buddhist community.
